The last we heard about Sony’s forthcoming handheld console was when the
Playstation Vita was priced and Sony said the console would be on sale in Autumn 2011. However, Sony's executive vice president Kazuo Hirai has now stated that the device won’t be on sale in the US and Europe until 2012.
According to the
Associated Press, Hirai said that the device would be available in Japan before the end of the year, but that the US and Europe would have to wait until early next year. Hirai reportedly didn't give a reason for the delay, but did say that Sony wanted to have a solid selection of games to launch with the new hardware.
However, Hirai did confirm that the price of the Vita won’t be affected by the recent news of Nintendo’s
3DS price cut: ‘
We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable,' Hirai told reporters at Sony's HQ in Tokyo.
'There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price.’
The 3DS is expected to drop to US$170 while the WiFi-only version of the Vita is set to cost US$250, while the phone-enabled version will cost US$300.
The Vita's
specs list includes a quad-core ARM A9 CPU, a SGX543MP4+ GPU, a 5in capacitive multi-touch display, a multi-touch pad on the back, twin cameras and built-in GPS.
