Sony has warned that the continued success of the PlayStation 3 Slim, which is officially labelled as just the PlayStation 3 since it has succeeded the older model, may mean that shortages of the console are likely later this year.
Obviously, Sony would say that to help drive interest and panic-sales for the console, but that doesn't mean it isn't true.
The new PlayStation 3 has apparently done predictable wonders for sales of Sony's PS3, with more than a million global sales already racked up and a shortage starting to appear in some territories.
"
We are up about 300 per cent over where we were pre-price drop," said Sony boss Jack Tretton in an interview with
Reuters (via
Eurogamer).
"
If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages," he warned.
It's not surprising that the PlayStation 3 Slim is doing so well compared to the previous version - the new model is both thinner and less power hungry, and comes packaged with a decent 120GB hard drive on top of the usual features.
