Sony has confirmed it is investigating reports that its most recent firmware update for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles, which added a wealth of new features including support for enhancing existing games when running on the more powerful PS4 Pro, has all-bit crippled their Wi-Fi capabilities.
The PlayStation 4 Firmware 4.50 update, which was released to users earlier this month, brought with it the promise of various shiny new features: PS4 Pro owners could begin to use the extra power of their consoles to improve the performance of existing PS4 titles through a new Boost Mode, the PlayStation VR system received support for 3D Blu-ray playback, and all versions of the console were upgraded to include full support for installing games directly to an external storage device.
Sadly, the update appears to have had an unforeseen side effect: broken Wi-Fi connectivity. A
hefty thread on Sony's support forum warns of the appearance of Error NW-31297-2 following the installation of Firmware 4.50, with warnings that the Wi-Fi passphrase may be incorrect or the network unavailable - despite no changes to the network and other devices on the same network continuing to operate perfectly.
Two weeks later, the thread is 26 pages long with still no fix in sight - but Sony has stated it's actively investigating the issue. In a brief statement to gaming site
Polygon, a Sony spokesperson said: '
we are aware and are looking into the situation.'
For now, the only sure-fire fix for anyone suffering from the issue is to run an Ethernet cable and disable the Wi-Fi altogether.
