The Sony PlayStation 3 will cost US$399 / 322 euros on it's release in November, according to an unsubstantiated report published in PSM. This would put it on par with the price of Xbox 360. No UK pricing is mentioned, but based on the magazine's exchange rates, it could be as low as £225.

These fresh rumours fly in the face of previous reports, including George Fornay, Vice President of Sony's Playstation division in Europe, who stated just three weeks ago that the PS3 would cost between 500 and 600 euros. It also somewhat contradicts SCE president, Ken Kutaragi, who suggested that the PlayStation 3 would be reassuringly expensive.

Press and gaming enthusiasts alike have been speculating the retail price of PS3 for the best part of a year now. Last June, Merill Lynch Japan estimated that Sony would lose US$100 on every PS3, even with an estimated price of US$490.

The good news is that Sony are in final preparations to end all speculation in a revealing press event on Monday 8th May in Los Angeles, on the eve of E3 which starts on Wednesday 10th.

Is this PSM report a leak of the offical pricing being announced a week on Monday or are they just stabbing in the dark? Time will tell. We thought it would be a bit of fun to run a sweepstake ahead of the official announcement. Hit the Forums to vote for the street price you think it will be.
