Quirky JRPG The World Ends With You has been pulled from the Apple app store by Square Enix after the developer has failed to deploy a suitable update for the game.
The World Ends With You: Solo Remix has been non-functional on iPad and iPhone devices since the launch of September's iOS 8 update. Previously, Square Enix had issued a warning on the app store saying that it is currently not functional and that the developer was working on a solution, but now Square Enix has simply pulled the game from the store.
Not only is the iOS version not available to buy, but re-downloading it if you have already bought it is no longer an option too.
Talking to
Polygon, Square Enix stated that the incompatibility with iOS 8 is a much bigger problem than it initially assumed. The publisher is apparently still working on a solution for the game, but cannot commit to a specific timeline as yet.
The mobile version of The World Ends With You was launched in 2012 on iOS and Android devices in 2014. This version followed Square Enix's usual pricing strategy on mobile devices and sat around the £14.99 mark.
The game is a port of a Nintendo DS title released in 2007 that was met with a general positive critical reception and proved to be commercially successful. Worldwide, the game sold more than 350,000 copies.
