Classic transportation mogul sim Transport Tycoon is heading to iOS and Android platforms later this year.

The 1994 fan favourite is being re-worked for touch-screen devices and has a new graphical style that still draws heavily from the original. As the original game was written in 8086 Assembler, the title is being completely rewritten for the modern platforms.

Transport Tycoon is being reworked by its original designer, Chris Sawyer, who was originally only brought on board to work on the business side of development, but has ended up getting more and more involved with the project overall.

Sawyer has confirmed that the game will be a paid title and will not feature any free-to-play mechanics or have any in-app advertising to try and bolster its income. Speaking to Gamasutra, Sawyer expressed his dislike for micro-transactions.

'The game doesn't suit the free-to-play revenue model,' said Sawyer. 'I'm also not a great fan of the way free-to-play titles try to make money through in-game purchases or advertising.'

Separate of Sawyer's efforts, an open source version of the game, Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe, has been available since 2004 and a dedicated team is continuously working on this project to expand the original game.

Starting out as a project to reverse engineer the game into C, the project went on to introduce larger maps, custom user-made AIs, more stable multiplayer modes and canal systems.

OpenTTD has even been available on the Apple app store sporadically with Apple having it removed several times due to legal complications as some versions require copyrighted material from the original game. The mobile port is however largely unplayable due to the disparity between mouse cursor size and finger size.
