Activision has confirmed the title and existence of another entry in the long-running Call of Duty series, revealing that the next game will be developed by Treyarch and be called Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set for a November 9th release date and, while platforms haven't been officially announced, it's a safe bet that it'll be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Treyarch have worked on the Call of Duty series before, usually alternating releases with Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward. Treyarch's entries in the series have typically been met with less acclaim than Infinity Ward's efforts, but Treyarch has remained a successful studio regardless.

Activision had previously hinted that Treyarch would be the next studio to put out a Call of Duty title, tiding the fans over until the remains of Infinity Ward finish up on Modern Warfare 3. Meanwhile, a new studio called Sledgehammer games is also working on a third Call of Duty title - speculated to be an MMO.

Treyarch's announcement came in the form of a short blog post which only gave the name and release date, urging fans to visit the official site regularly for bigger updates.

Previously it was rumoured that Treyarch was working on a game set in the Vietnam war called, inventively, Call of Duty: Vietnam. It's not confirmed whether the name has changed and Black Ops itself will be set in the Vietnam conflict and new rumours have arisen suggesting that Black Ops may actually be a more stealth-focused game that uses the Cold War setting.

Activision recently announced a new 10-year partnership with Halo developer Bungie too, so it's a big week for the biggest game publisher in the world.
