Microsoft has announced that it will soon be pulling the plug on all Xbox Live services for the original Xbox, terminating Xbox Live on the older console and the Xbox Classics series. The move will also affect any backwards compatible Xbox games that run on the Xbox 360.

"I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly," Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten said in a letter to Xbox Live members, "but after careful consideration, it is clear that this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox Live community."

The reason for the change is apparently that Microsoft wants to continue evolving and upgrading the Xbox Live service, adding on changes that are incompatible with the older versions of Xbox Live.

"We will contact the Xbox LIVE members directly impacted by this change and if this includes you, I encourage you to check your LIVE messages and associated e-mail account over the coming weeks for more details and opportunities."

The most popular Xbox 1 games still played on Xbox Live are, according to Major Nelson, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Counter-Strike and Halo 2.

Do you still play any Xbox original games on Xbox Live, or have you put that decade wholly behind you? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

Thanks for the tip go to forum member Blademrk, who is so cool he's already playing Halo 4 on the Xbox 720!
