Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One has, like the PS4 a week before, sold over one million units in its opening 24hrs of sales.

The console launched on 22nd November in the US, EU, Australia and Brazil and just 24 hours later it had already passed the one million mark, making it the biggest Xbox launch yet.

In comparison the Xbox 360 had only sold 1.5 million units by the end of the year, after it launched on the same date. It was beset by supply problems, though, as it only went into full production 69 days before launch.

That said, the Xbox One has also already sold out in most retailers, with Microsoft saying "We are working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand from our customers."

"Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season," said corporate vice president of marketing and stategy Yusuf Mehdi.

It is predicted that the combined sales of the PS4 and Xbox One will top 5 million by the end of the two company's 2014 financial years.

Meanwhile the PS4, which attained its one million sales despite only launching in the US, has a Europe-wide release date of 29 November - that's this Friday.
