Microsoft is prepping a new update to the Xbox 360 that will introduce some new dashboard features.

The major thing is background downloading - the ability to download from Xbox Live whilst doing other things. This has been a real pain in the butt for gamers since day one - if you want to download a demo (typically 500MB) then you have to wait while that finishes before you can do anything else. Now, those problems will be gone, and about time too.

There will be a new option to allow the console to boot directly to the Dashboard when a disc is in the drive, a bugbear for those who spend a lot of time playing Arcade titles.

Lastly, MS is adding bookmarking to DVD playback, allowing you to start playing a DVD from when you finished.

The update was due to hit on Tuesday, but was delayed for some unknown reason. Microsoft says to expect the update sometime in the next few days.

Will you go on a Live downloading spree now that it won't interrupt the rest of your gaming? Give us your thoughts over in the forums.
