Microsoft has announced the Xbox Wireless Controller Tech Series, an apparent attempt to bridge the gap between the standard Xbox Wireless Controller and the top-end Elite variant, beginning with what it calls the Recon Tech Special Edition.
Introduced with the Xbox One Elite
back in September 2015, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller offers a range of improvements: swappable triggers with 'Hair Trigger Locks,' a larger digital direction pad, improved buttons, and other changes with which Microsoft attempts to convince gamers to pay £120. Perhaps understanding that such a sum is a heck of a lot to pay for a single controller, Microsoft has now announced the Xbox Wireless Controller Tech Series in an attempt to bridge the gulf between the standard controller and the high-priced Elite.
The new family of controllers begins with the Recon Tech Special Edition, Microsoft has announced. '
In developing this new controller series, the Xbox team was inspired by military technology and performance patterns, exploring concepts stemming from combat armour and sci-fi mechanical gear,' claimed Bree White, the marketing manager in charge of pushing the product, in the company's
announcement. '
Premium finishes like a laser etched texture, gold accents and insignia are on the front of the controller. The back of the controller features textured diamond rubberised grip for added control and comfort.'
The Tech Series will, Microsoft has confirmed, sit between the standard and Elite variants in price: UK pricing has been estimated by Microsoft at £59.99, while the company is setting a US recommended retail price of $69.99 compared to $149.99 for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and $59.99 for the standard variant. Interestingly, this makes it the same price as many of the company's existing 'Special Edition' controllers, such as the Winter Forces or Ocean Shadow Special Editions, which differ from the standard edition only in the colour of their casing and buttons.
More information on the Xbox Wireless Controller Recon Tech Special Edition can be found on the
official product page, with availability scheduled for April 25th.
