In a surprise visit, Steve jobs returned from sick leave yesterday to launch Apple's new tablet, the iPad 2.
A 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor and front and rear cameras are perhaps the most interesting additions to the specs. Compared to the original iPad, Apple claims that the new device offers up to double the CPU performance, and nine times the graphics performance.
It's 33 per cent thinner than the iPad too, slimming down from 13.4mm to just 8.8mm thick, although the other dimensions remain unchanged. Weighing 600g, it's also around 80g lighter than its predecessor.
However, the screen is essentially the same as the display found in the original iPad. The 9.7in LED-backlit LCD has a resolution of 1,024 x 768, and also features IPS panel technology.
Apple sold 15 million iPads in 2010, so its tablet design is far from a flop. That said, its share of the tablet marketplace dropped by nearly a quarter by December last year as competitors released their own tablet designs.
Apple also slashed prices of its original iPad shortly after the launch. The 16GB WiFi-only iPad is now available for just £329 - £110 cheaper than the equivalent iPad 2 model.
