James Pond is the latest classic gaming franchise to turn to Kickstarter for an attempted revival.
Launching next week on September 20, publisher Gameware and original series creator Chris Sorrell hope to bring new life back into the 90s platformer series and bring the character up to date.
In a short video introducing the Kickstarter, Sorrell says that he still gets people asking about James Pond even though 20 years have passed. Having never owned the rights to the brand, he has been unable to work any further with the character until Gameware asked him to help out with this project.
Details of the revival are sketchy at the moment, but Sorrell does mention that they will probably be ‘skipping the chocolate biscuits’ this time, a reference to the fact that Penguin biscuits feature heavily throughout James Pond 2: Robocod.
The James Pond series is the latest in a long line of attempted Kickstarter campaigns to attempt to bring back old franchises or spiritual successors. Some like the recent Might No.9 campaign have met with resounding success in a matter of hours whilst others like the Dizzy rebooting attempt are left floundering for funds.
James Pond debuted in 1990 and earned two sequels, James Pond 2: Robocod and James Pond 3: Operation Starfish. Sorrell points out in his video that Robocod has been ported to almost every platform imaginable and was by far the most successful entry of the series.
