AMD's share of the discrete graphics card market has increased by 16.79 per cent in the last year, according to the latest
graphics card shipment figures from marketing and research firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR).
The figures, which are based on discrete graphics cards sales in the first quarter of 2011, show AMD making further gains on market leader Nvidia. AMD GPUs now account for 40.46 per cent of the whole discrete graphics market, although this is still a way behind the 59.12 per cent share that Nvidia currently holds.
There is plenty of reason to be positive if you have AMD shares, though, as this time last year the boys in red were holding onto a market share of just 34.65 per cent.
JPR also mentions that graphics card shipments as a whole grew last quarter, as the market shipped 19.03 million units compared with the 18.84 million units of the previous quarter. However, overall shipments are still down compared with the same period last year.
The report ends on a note of caution too, as it predicts that the discrete graphics card market will end the year with revenues of $19.8 billion, down 4.5 per cent from last year. The reason the company cites for this decrease in market value is an increasing pressure on average selling prices (ASP) across the market.
