At 1:30pm today, Taipei time, AMD held a press conference to mark the official launch of its Athlon 64 X2 line of dual core processors.

We reviewed the Athlon 64 X2 4800+ back at the start of this month, and were surprised at just how good the dual-core experience was.

As we mentioned back then, the CPU's are not cheap - starting at $537 for the 4200+, and going up to $1001 for the top of the line 4800+.

The conference detailed the immediate availability of these dual core babies, and you should be able to purchase one from your favorite online retailer within the next week or so. AMD have dubbed the release of its dual core CPUs 'The Death of the Hour Glass', and after extensively testing the Athlon 64 X2 4800+, we believe that this day is not too far away at all.

The smoothness of the dual core experience can not be matched by Intel's HyperThreading technology, and Intel are attacking the dual core market with different intentions, as we discussed just last week.

We can't wait to see some cheaper models released in the coming months - a strategy that AMD adopted for its mainstream socket 939 processors towards the end of last year.
