When we visited Cooler Master yesterday in Taipei, the company had very little to show us without signing an embargo, but it did say that it is hard at work on a new line of products that it believes will deliver an interesting new take on case design.
Details of the new case line are very scarce at the moment, as the company is still in the early stages of development. However, we’re told that the new line will be targeted at the lucrative ‘gamer’ market.
We’ve expressed our concerns about the increasing focus on fleecing gamers and enthusiasts by only offering feature complete products with high price premiums in the past, so the fact that this case line is targeted at this market posed more questions.
I asked if the new line would increase ones frame rate in a typical first-person shooter, knowing full well what the answer would be. The company didn’t disappoint in that respect – it said that the case isn’t just targeted at the gamer and it should appeal to other markets as well.
We tried digging further, but the farthest we got was the company saying that it was a move away from many of its ‘playing safe’ designs from recent years. In fact, it said that it doesn’t believe what it is working on has been done before.
I’m intrigued as to where Cooler Master will go with this new line of cases, but I guess we’re going to have to wait a while before we get to find out. What could happen though is that Cooler Master finds that its new cases turn into love-hate designs—like Lian Li’s recent Armoursuit PC-P80—but then that’s to be expected with something as personal as a chassis.
Would you like to see some more interesting case designs on the market, or are you quite happy with the many
fridge-like designs that fill the market today? Tell us
in the forums.
