Google has unveiled a new version of the Google Nexus 7 that sports an ultra high-resolution screen and improved battery life, and debuts Android 4.3.
Building on the cut-price success of the first Nexus 7, this new 7in tablet has improvements right across the board but still maintains an impressively low price. At $229, it's $30 more than the original Nexus 7 was when it launched but this is still some 30 percent cheaper than the cheapest iPad mini ($329).
“The Nexus 7 launched a year ago and it’s been a great success,” Hugo Berra, Google Vice President of Android Product Management said at the unveiling. “Today, together with Asus we are announcing the new Nexus 7.”
He added: “We are staying focused on exactly the same things that made the original Nexus 7 so successful: portability, performance and of course the power of Google.”
Improvements on the new Google Nexus 7 include the highest resolution display for a 7in device, with a Full HD-surpassing 1920 x 1200 pixels. This 323 ppi pixel density still pales in comparison to the sharpness of the latest phones, which have 1080p pixels on displays under five inches, but it's nonetheless class leading for a tablet.
Battery life has also increased from 7hrs to 10hrs while the processor has jumped to a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro with Adreno 320 graphics. Google claims this processor is 80 percent faster than that of the previous Nexus 7.
A completely new addition is a 5MP rear camera, which joins the 1.2MP unit on the front, while stereo speakers will help to improve audio. Other features include 2GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, wireless charging and the option for a 4G connection.
On the software side, Android 4.3 has improved multi-user options with restrictive content features offering parents the chance to limit what their children can access. Under the bonnet improvements like Bluetooth Smart and Open GL graphics support also make it into this update.
The new Google Nexus 7 will be available on July 30th in America while other countries, including the UK, Germany, Japan, Canada, Spain, France, Australia, and South Korea, will get it in the coming weeks.
