MSI has announced two new special-edition entries to its Gaming family of motherboards, one for the Z170 chipset and one for the X99 with the latter boasting possibly one of the most ridiculous names in technology's long and storied history.
Designed to sit at the very top of the company's Gaming family, the Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Edition and X99A Godlike Gaming Carbon Edition - told you it had a ridiculous name - are linked by a full-black colour scheme and carbon fibre veneer flourishes, along with a user-controllable RGB LED lighting system dubbed 'Mystic Light' with the promise of 16.8 million colour shades and 16 individual lighting effects wasted on anyone who doesn't have a windowed case.
The X99A Godlike Gaming Carbon Edition also includes a check-list of top-end features from the company's Overclocking and Gaming motherboard families: the Turbo Socket, with its 2,036 pins, true USB 3.1 Type A and Type C sockets, Turbo M.2 sotrage support, the Killer DoubleShot-X3 Pro triple-route networking system, Audio Boost 3 sound circuitry and the promise of top-end performance and overclocking headroom 'while looking awesome,' according to the press release.
The Z170A Gaming Pro Carbon Edition, meanwhile, drops the Killer networking but retains other features of the X99A version including Audio Boost 3, Steel Armour reinforcement for heavier graphics cards to prevent damage to the PCI Express slots, and the carbon fibre veneer finish in place of the traditional red and black colour scheme.
UK pricing for the two motherboards has yet to be confirmed, but with little difference in specification beyond the use of carbon fibre veneer the cost is expected to be roughly level with the current non-carbon editions.
