The press embargo is in place for several more hours, but there is already feverish activity surrounding NVIDIA's release today of their latest GPU, the GeForce 7800GTX (previously known at G70).
Overclocking legend Oppainter has already watercooled a pair of 7800GTX cards in SLI, and posted his results on the
XtremeSystems forums: using stock voltage, his initial SLI run clocked the cards to 534 / 1380Mhz and recorded a truely insane 15,990 3DMarks in 2005 and 34,011 in 3DMark 2003.
The lunacy didn't stop there: with a single watercooled card, he eventually worked his way up to 549 / 1449Mhz and with the help of a 2.6Ghz FX-55 clocked to 3.6Ghz, he managed 9,922 in 3DMark '05, 21,168 in 2003 and 41,646 in 2001.
Naturally, the
Beyond3D forums are running hot with discussions about all manner of technicalities, though several readers are planning on keeping their credit cards in their pockets until ATI has a chance to reply to today's launch.
The unusual aspect of this product launch is that retail stock will be available from today. That's right: no more paper launches, no waiting a month or three until we can buy the cards - NVIDIA have been in full production for a number of weeks and, subject to stock, you should be able to place orders for cards later today.
OCUK say they have stock already, which you will be able to order online at 2pm, or collect from their counter.
Demand is expected to be high, and there are already several opportunists on eBay promising immediate delivery; the catch is a price of up to US$999 - a full 50% premium on the expected US$599 RRP of the card. Personally, I wouldn't trust these sellers: you have very little recourse if you make payment and no card arrives - stick to a reseller you know you can trust, and just be patient.
We will bring you more NVIDIA-related goodness later on today.
