Gaming peripherals specialist Razer has announced a mouse mat with a difference: it features customisable lighting effects thanks to integrated RGB LEDs.
Designed, naturally, to complement the company's range of gaming mice and keyboards, the Razer Firefly is at first glance a fairly standard mousing surface. Its 'micro-textured finish [and] optimised surface coating' is designed for easy tracking by both LED and laser-based optical sensors while still allowing the mouse to glide easily, and a non-slip rubber base stops the pad from shifting around your desk during particularly energetic gaming sessions. The first hint that something is amiss comes from the presence of a USB port at the top of the pad, connected to a seven-foot braided cable.
Connected to a Windows or OS X machine, Razer explains, this SUB cable provides power and configuration to a series of integrated RGB LEDs around the sides and bottom edge of the pad - but not the top. These LEDs are configured through the company's Synapse software, but also feature support for its Chroma software development kit - meaning that it can synchronise its lighting with other Chroma-based peripherals, such as headsets, keyboards and mice. The Chroma support also means that game developers can add direct support for the LEDs into their games, using them interactively - flashing when the player is hit, or fading to red as health runs low, for example.
'The Razer Firefly opens up a new category for the Chroma family,' crowed Min-Liang Tan, Razer's co-founder and chief executive, of the launch. 'We’ve designed the Razer Firefly with the best components for a gaming mouse mat, along with the new, fully-customizable Chroma lighting. No one said you can’t win with style.'
The mat is due to launch world-wide in June 2015, priced at €74.99 (around £48).
