Peripherals maker Tesoro has announced a new optical mouse aimed at massively multiplayer online (MMO) and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) titles, dubbed the Thyrsus.
Designed specifically for the many-macro requirements of MMO and MOBA games, the Thyrsus - named, the company explains, for the staff of Dionysus, the fun-loving Greek god of wine, madness and fertility - the mouse features six buttons on its left-hand edge for easy access by the thumb of the right hand. Coupled with the traditional buttons and scroll wheel, that makes for a total of 10 programmable buttons - profiles for which are stored in 64KB of integrated memory.
The mouse engine itself includes a processor featuring a 1,000Hz polling rate and six sensitivity levels to a maximum of 8,200 dots per inch (DPI), 150 inches per second (IPS) motion detection and support for up to 30G acceleration. High-quality Omron switches are used for the mouse buttons, while the multicolour lighting of the scroll-wheel and logo can be customised through the company's latest software, itself redesigned with a new user interface claimed to be more user-friendly.
Externally, the mouse features a soft-touch rubberised surface and a two-metre sleeved USB cable with gold-plated plug. The Thyrsus is due to launch in August in North America, priced at $69 (around £44 excluding tax); UK pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed.
