Storage specialist Plextor has announced a new release of its smart caching software, PlexTurbo, which adds support for additional solid-state drives in the company's portfolio.
Plextor announced a new revision of PlexTurbo alongside its
M6e Black Edition PCIe SSD at the Consumer Electronics Show early last month. Like previous versions, PlexTurbo 2.0 reserves a chunk of system memory - between 256MB and 1GB depending on SSD capacity - to speed up access of frequently-requested files. The system is resistant to sudden loss of power - an issue with some other DRAM-based caching solutions which requires, in enterprise-grade hardware, an active battery backup to resolve - and is claimed to considerably improve performance over relying on caching technologies built into the operating system itself.
The original PlexTurbo 1.0 release arrived with the company's
M6 Pro SSD, but 2.0 brings with it considerably wider support. As well as offering improved performance to M6 Pro owners, the new version will work with any capacity of M6e 2.5" SSD, M6e M.2 SSD, or the aforementioned M6e Black Edition PCIe SSD to improve performance.
The new PlexTurbo software can be activated by installing the company's Plextool software toolkit - a Windows exclusive, at present. M6 owners who have already installed Plextool 1.1.5, which includes PlexTurbo 1.0, are advised to uninstall the old version before installing the new release - in-place upgrades, it seems, are not supported. Installation does not require a firmware update on the drive - although Plextool can be used to install one if it is available - and should not affect any data currently stored on the drive.
The latest Plextool software, 1.1.6, can be downloaded from Plextor's
official website now.
