Samsung has announced a pair of 2TB solid-state drives (SSDs), the 850 PRO and 850 EVO, based on the company's 3D vertical-NAND (V-NAND) technology.
Based on the same three-dimensional cell layout as the company's other high-capacity drives, both the 850 PRO and 850 EVO 2TB flavours feature a 7mm 2.5" aluminium casing housing 128 individual 32-layer 128Gb 3D V-NAND flash chips. The drives boast an upgraded MHX controller with support for the impressive 2TB capacity, along with 2GB of LPDDR3 cache memory in four 4GB 20nm chips.
'Samsung experienced surge in demand for 500 gigabyte (GB) and higher capacity SSDs with the introduction of our V-NAND SSDs,' claimed Un-Soo Kim, senior vice-president of branded product marketing for Samsung's memory division, at the announcement. 'The release of the 2TB SSD is a strong driver into the era of multi-terabyte SSD solutions. We will continue to expand our ultra-high performance and large density SSD product portfolio and provide a new computing experience to users around the globe.'
The two drives are aimed at subtly different markets: the 850 EVO, as with its predecessors, has the high-end consumer in mind and boasts a five-year or 150 terabytes-written warranty; the 850 PRO, by contrast, boosts this to 10 years or 300 terabytes-written to better attract the corporate buyer. The 850 EVO boasts 540MB/s and 520MB/s sequential read and write speeds respectively, while the 850 PRO raises the read speed slightly to 550MB/s.
Samsung has confirmed plans to further extend its high-capacity 3D V-NAND offerings, following the release of these 2.5" SATA drives with mSATA and M.2 form factor devices in the near future.
UK pricing has been confirmed at £636.99 for the 2TB 850 EVO and £749.99 for the 2TB 850 PRO.
