Internet Explorer 8 Click Clever Click Safe browser helps parents and young people tackle online safety fears

Knowledge is the key to staying protected as survey reveals lack of awareness between generations

LONDON, UK. — 9th February 2010, Microsoft has partnered with CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) to launch a new customised Internet Explorer 8 browser, available for download today at www.clickceop.net/ie8 . Internet Explorer 8 Click Clever Click Safe is the first browser to promote online safety for families, with a clear and direct route to CEOP via the ‘Click CEOP’ button.

Jim Gamble CEO of CEOP said:

“Internet safety advice needs to be at your fingertips and not hidden away. Parents and children should not have to go searching through numerous web pages to find the help they need. The new CEOP-customised Internet Explorer 8 browser will embed advice, help and report services directly into the toolbar to provide a constant, reassuring presence for families who will be one click away from the support they need. We again applaud Microsoft for this development in child safety and look forward to working with other browser developers to make an even safer online environment for our children.”

Research released by Microsoft today, highlights the critical need to raise online safety awareness amongst young people. Results reveal that 64% of under-18 year olds in the UK have been contacted by someone they don’t know online, and worryingly, over one third responded. However, the research also found that it is not only young people that need to build awareness of using the internet responsibly, but parents too. The research further shows that 41% of parents do not know whether their child has privacy settings enabled on their social network, and, 58% of young people say their parents do nothing to limit or control their use of the internet.

In response to this, Internet Explorer 8 Click Clever Click Safe provides young people with immediate access to CEOP, the government’s one-stop shop for internet safety, where they can report any concerns they may have and see the most up to date information about staying safe online for the whole family.

Matthew Bishop, Business and Marketing Officer at Microsoft commented:

“As a father myself, online safety is an issue very close to my heart, which is why I am personally committed to making sure we develop the right tools to help make the internet a safer place. Internet Explorer 8 Click Clever Click Safe has been designed with the sole purpose of providing young people and parents with easy ways of finding information on how to stay safer online. As more and more young people are learning, playing and communicating online, it is vital we provide the appropriate safety information as we know this is one of the most effective ways of helping to protect people.”

Features of the new browser include a Web Slice in the toolbar which, with one click, provides direct access to a variety of useful information including:

• Cyber bullying

• Viruses

• Hacking

• Mobile Protection

• Harmful Content

• Sexual behavior

The Web Slice also contains relevant advice broken down by age groups to help families understand the appropriate needs of young people. Other features include a favourites bar which link to useful sites such as CEOP and Thinkuknow, and to information on parental controls so parents can restrict Internet use by their children. There is also the ability to instantly search CEOP and its internet safety partners’ sites from the browsers search bar, providing a comprehensive suite of valuable information for all families.
