Freecom, an award-winning manufacturer of external hard drives and portable storage devices, today launched the ‘MediaPlayer II’, a compact cost-effective, dedicated hard drive-based mobile multimedia player that seamlessly delivers digital media from your PC to a TV, projector or Hi-fi set. The MediaPlayer II has a sleek aluminium design and supports all common AV-file formats, allowing users to access and enjoy digital media content anywhere, anytime, and completely PC-free.

The MediaPlayer II holds up to 1TB of data – it can store and play back up to 220 full DVD movies, 200,000 MP3s and 668,000 digital photos* – and is also ideal for those who need extra storage space on their home network, doubling as a fast USB 2.0 external hard drive. With HDMI video capabilities (up to 1080i), the MediaPlayer II also supports open source format mkv files and includes a BitTorrent client for managing downloads trouble-free. In addition, upgradable firmware ensures that the MediaPlayer II is running the latest software.

By connecting the MediaPlayer II to a PC or network router, users can simply drag and drop their desired content onto the drive and then directly connect to the audio or visual medium of their choice, making audio and video playback effortless. Furthermore, the Media Player II comes with an optional Wireless LAN (WLAN) adapter, enabling consumers to move their content around easily and to stream movies and music without having to leave the couch.

“We live in such a portable age that everyone expects to be able to view their data on the move – the MediaPlayer II is perfect for those who want entertainment any place, any time, and all at the touch of a button,” said Axel Lucassen, co-founder and executive senior VP of product line management and marketing at Freecom. “Users are no longer restricted to watching movies on miniature PC monitors, and listening to MP3 files on small PC speaker systems is now a thing of the past, as are time-consuming sessions creating and burning CDs or DVDs. By simply dragging and dropping files from a PC to the MediaPlayer II, your data becomes instantly portable – connect to a TV or Hi-fi and you’re ready to go.”

With a fast hard drive, JPEG viewer, and video and music player all-in-one, Freecom’s portable MediaPlayer II system is designed to make data-sharing with friends and family fun and simple. Furthermore, its small size (203 mm x 160 mm x 46 mm), noise-free operation and handy remote control make it the perfect addition to any home.

The MediaPlayer II is also available as a ‘Drive Kit’ without a built-in hard drive. This option allows consumers to assemble their own specified hard drive, or alternatively use the device without a hard drive as an AV Wireless streaming device.

*Storage capacity breakdown based on highest quality data: 1xDVD movie = 4.5GB, 1xMP3 = 5MB, 1x.JPG = 1.5MB
