A new London based startup has picked a fight with the most dominant factor on the Internet. The small startup called Seevol a combination of the words “search and “evolution” have been working 2 years on developing a high quality search engine to compete with Google.
Here is what Frank Kristiansen the founder of Seevol has to say about the search engine industry:
“It is unheard of that a whole industry can stay so passive in its evolution for so long without being destroyed by small innovative competitors. The way search results are displayed did not change at all since Altavista in 1995 that is 18 years with absolutely no chance!”
Seevol believes that the reason we don't see more small search engine startups trying to compete with Google is because of storage issues.
Frank Kristiansen:
“When Google started the Internet was small, and you could start relatively small. This is no longer possible and you are forced to start big if you want to deliver good results. This is what closes the door for many individuals with great ideas”
Seevol is also not happy with the search results shown in Google, or in any other search engine.
Frank Kristiansen:
“The biggest problems with the results in Google are pages with Google Adsense on them. They are in general always low or even bad quality because the only purpose they have is to redirect people to relevant pages via banners in return for a small payment. But Google cannot blacklist all pages with Adsense, it will kill Adsense and a very big part of the income Google generates from advertisement”
The Seevol founder also underlined that the reason people keep using Google, despite the bad results is because nothing different exists. When asked about Bing he said that Bing isn't different, its just a copy of Google, but with worse results.
So what is it exactly Seevol intent to do different?
Google have an algorithm that selects the most relevant pages for the top results. Seevol is different in the way that the algorithm is used because it doesn't calculate who should be in the top of page one, it calculates who should be allowed in the search engine and who should be excluded completely.
Frank Kristiansen:
“We will not allow affiliate or Adsense websites in our search engine no matter how high the quality on the page is. We see this as low quality and unnecessary noise in the results”
The idea is to only index domains that have proven themselves to deliver high quality results, and then run an algorithm similar to the Google algorithm on these sites in order to find the most relevant to the search a user makes. Seevol say that because they simply exclude all low quality content links will not be a part of the ranking factor.
Frank Kristiansen:
“using links as a ranking factor was developed by Google to find the “trusted” pages. We don't need that because we trust every single pages that is in our search engine.”
“The use of links as a ranking factor was needed when the Internet was young and a wild. But things have changed and everything is structured now, so by still using links as a factor you only give low quality the opportunity to compete on equal ground. Its like giving the terrorist a chance”
Seevol Do not only intent to change the way search works, they also intent to change the way a search engine looks, or more specific the way results are visually displayed.
Frank Kristiansen:
“we live in an age of private space travel, 3D holograms and computer games operated by brain waves, but we still display search results in plain text with blue links like we did 18 years ago when Altavista was launched. We have changed that, and will use a lot of energy to make searching a more visually pleasant experience. The technology is there”
Seevol is currently searching for investors and is not online yet, but intent to launch in the beginning of 2014 from a London headquarter. The search engine will be Global, multilingual and provide 100% anonymous search for its users.
