GoldenEye: Source Preview Levels

If you hadn't already figured it out from the name, GoldenEye: Source is a Total Conversion (TC) mod using Half Life 2's powerful Source engine. The game is being produced by 36 dedicated enthusiasts who all have fond memories of the original GoldenEye for N64 and wanted to update that classic gameplay with 2005 graphics.

We first brought you news of the project back in July, but the team have been working hard over Summer, adding new features, more weapons - 22 so far - and polishing off the fifteen maps. Currently, only one level -Temple - is complete.

The new features include a Paintball mode to sit along side Deathmatch and other planned game modes, and a new Heads-Up-Display (HUD) is also in development. It will look similar to the original game, but feature some more modern tweaks. We are yet to see any Character models, but they too are in progress, the player movement is being constantly tweaked. The run-speed is a crucial variable in First-Person Shooter games, so the team are adjusting it to requirements as the level designs mature. A lean left/right mode is also a welcome addition.

As you can see, the look of the levels benefits greatly from the advanced lighting & shadowing of the Source engine. Some levels, like Bunker, deliberately stray somewhat from the original game in an effort to keep things fresh, while others will be plenty familiar to GoldenEye fans.

The Alpha version of the game is nearly ready, and the team are looking forward to moving towards Beta status - more volunteers will be recuited from the community for gameplay testing.

Let us now play the role of the virtual 'Q' and show you some of the advanced weaponry that will be available in GoldenEye: Source. Did someone says guns, lots of guns?
