At a point after every feature has been introduced, the mechanics start intermingling together and create a chaos that would be insurmountable to begin. There's expert pacing and level design on display here. You’ll be introduced to a new mechanic in an isolated environment, then quickly you’ll be forced to use that knowledge in conjunction with an entirely different situation. Each block has a different feature that you’ll come to learn. Some disappear when touched, others can be walked through, some slow your descent if you’re touching them letting you wall-jump. Every feature is so well implemented and taught that a task is never overwhelming, but it’s interesting to execute.

There's a level-editor mode here too for when, as the developers described in the launch trailer: "if you hate our stuff, shut up and do better". You've the full range of level creation tools here and, although the game's just been released, there’s real potential for great creations from enthusiast fans.

Though the single player component is lengthy and enjoyable, BattleBlock is a game truly designed for Co-Op or Versus play. The story mode changes the design of the levels if two players are around allowing for the abilities that players have to throw their partner into hard to reach areas, use their not-yet-respawned body as a platform or offer a helping hand reaching the top of a too-high climb. You aren’t just replaying the same levels with your friend, you’re playing specially designed areas with co-op in mind.

In Versus Mode the game's filled with a variety of different activities that play well in a party setting or over the Internet. Four players compete in teams to achieve differing goals. Some are exactly like other modes in different games - like a standard Team-Death match, King-Of-The-Hill or Capture The Flag (in this case, Horse) - but more interesting ones include something that’s similar to a Tony-Hawk like “Graffiti” mode or a sort-of Keep-Away game but using your opponent’s soul. They’re all pretty fun and will go down a treat if you’ve a couple friends over.
There’s ample opportunity for you alone, or with your friends, to have a great time here. BattleBlock Theatre is a fun game that, above all other possible praise, was worth the extended wait.
