Mounting Radiators

The next part was a drive cage. This area had been evolving through the time of planning; I went through three different versions: the first one with regular 5.25in DVD drive and two hard drives hung under it on bungee rope.


I then decided I needed to save some space in the Cube, so my second version used a slim DVD drive, making the drive cage smaller. Under it were only two hard drives hung using Velcro tapes. Lastly, the third version was invented when I got further into building the watercooling system. I decided that double radiator may not be enough to cool CPU and GPU so I added second - single radiator and installed it in the bottom of the drive cage with 12mm red led Yate Loon fan, meaning the drives had another revision around this.


March 2008 was the first time the Cube was raised from an extended hiatus after almost year I started this build. All six clear acrylic panels were connected with the square rod columns and brass inserts, and the motherboard tray was fitted nicely inside. For a first time the “clear” Cube had seen daylight. It was also time to start gathering all the watercooling parts: I had planned to use a Swiftech double radiator to cool GPU and CPU, so I fabricated radiator frame and feet to install it in the Cube.


All internal parts were then made from red acrylic sheet. I spent months searching for pure red acrylic, but all I could get was UV red or translucent red acrylic, which had orange or pinkish colour in daylight. At last I found some red tinted acrylic, which I finally bought and used here.
