More Problems...
The second to last problem I came across was when I started making the internal frame for the drives. It required precision measurements to perfectly align the frame with the slots on the outside, for which I used a milling machine.
Unfortunately I didn’t manage to think of an easier way of making the frame with the tools and machines I had. Eventually I ended up with a riveted frame made from aluminium angle, and flat bar.
The final problem was in creating a perfect, imperfection free surface, which was made very difficult because of the gaps between the fibres in the fibreglass.
I am quite experienced in spray painting, however black is a difficult colour to work with as it reveals imperfections more than other paints. Therefore I needed to get the surface extremely smooth to obtain the mirror finish I was aiming for.
In the end best way I found to create a smooth finish was to use fine surface filler, in combination with many of layers of paint (each layer sanded smooth before the next) to fill the very fine imperfections. However after many many hours I ended up with a perfect finish.
