Tagan was one of the first PSU brands to produce an enthusiast PSU, and several models picked up awards in the early days of Custom PC magazine. Since then, Tagan has struggled against the tide of competitors, but it still remains at the forefront of modern PSU design. The SuperRock didn’t look particularly attractive when we took it out of its box. We’ve grown to loathe captive cables, so to see them on a PSU that costs more than £100 is disappointing, no matter how stable or quiet it is.
Each of its four 12V rails is rated at up to 18A, with a combined output of 62A. The PCB actually has five 12V rails but the first isn’t connected to anything so the rest are configured as follows: 12V1 and 12V2 each feed a single 6+2-pin PCI-E connector, 12V3 powers the CPU and 12V4 deals with the motherboard and disk drives. A substantial 95 per cent of the TG780-U33II SuperRock’s 780W total power output can be allocated to the 12V rails.

Stability wasn’t a problem for the SuperRock – it passed all our tests without so much as a hiccup. What’s more, it was an impressive 88 per cent efficient at 50 per cent load and 87 per cent efficient at full load – a welcome improvement over earlier Tagan PSUs. The SuperRock is fairly quiet too although not the quietest PSU on test. The SuperRock is another solid PSU, but its captive cables and lack of post-shutdown cooling mean it fails to make our shortlist.
