During an analyst conference call last night, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick revealed that the publisher plans to turn BioShock into an ongoing franchise.

When asked about how to avoid watering down a franchise with annual releases, Zelnick responded by saying: “I would say, probably, roughly an every-two-year schedule would be optimal. And if you look historically that has been largely the case with GTA, and I’d expect we’d apply rougly the same strategy to BioShock because BioShock is shaping up to be a very important franchise.

“I don’t want to say more than that about BioShock because I certainly don’t want to jinx it, but I feel awfully good about where that’s going.”

During the call, Take-Two also said that 2K Boston/2K Australia’s popular underwater first person shooter has become the fastest demo to hit one million downloads on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Finally, the publisher revealed that 1.5 million units of BioShock have shipped worldwide already, but there were no details on exactly how many retail sales this equates to. When questioned on how many sales this equated to, Zelnick told analysts that the publisher thinks BioShock is “one of the fastest selling games in video game history.”

Take-Two also refused to detail the breakdown between PC and Xbox 360 sales for the popular title too.
