Apple has declared Ridiculous Fishing as its iPhone game of the year and Badland as its iPad game of the year.
Ridiculous Fishing - A Tale of Redemption by indie favourite Vlambeer has been a popular title for many iOS users. It is based on a flash game that the developer sold back in 2010, Radical Fishing.
Like many of Vlambeer's games, Ridiculous Fishing also inspired a clone with Ninja Fishing being the same core game with altered artwork.
Runners up in the iPhone category go to Device 6, a hybrid puzzle and interactive fiction game and the ever popular Plants vs. Zombies 2. Side scrolling Badland which won the iPad category was followed by the iPad version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Impossible Road.
Apple did not award these titles to the best selling apps of 2013. At present, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Plants vs. Zombies HD and Temple Run: Oz top the app store charts with Candy Crush Saga and Temple Run 2 topping the free apps chart.
Outside of gaming, Apple's iPhone App of the Year award went to language learning app Duolingo and the iPad app of the year was won by Disney Animated, a behind the scenes compilation from several of Disney's films.
On iTunes in general, the top selling media included Skyfall as the best-selling film, Breaking Bad as the top selling TV show and Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience as the most downloaded album. On the iBooks store, Inferno by Dan Brown took the top spot.
