Crytek’s proprietary game engine the CryEngine can now be picked up by interested developers through Steam.
CryEngine can be accessed through Valve’s digital distribution platform for a monthly subscription fee. The subscription is available for £6.99 each month, £6.33 per month if you sign up for three months and £5.83 if you commit to six months.
Subscriptions entitle developers to the latest build of CryEngine and will receive automatic updates to the engine. At the time of writing, The CryEngine is being promoted on the front page of Steam’s digital storefront.
Games created with the CryEngine include the Crysis series, early entries to the Far Cry series, Xbox One release title Ryse: Son of Rome and the upcoming crowd funded Star Citizen.
Anything created through CryEngine will be royalty free and developers will not have to pay any form of kickback to Crytek, meaning developers are completely free to sell their creations.
Crytek started experimenting with a subscription model for its technology back in March with the CryEngine as a Service program aimed at independent developers. Prior to that, the CryEngine SDK was also available for free, but without access to newer features.
The CryEngine has followed in the wake of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 which was released under a subscription model earlier this year. Opening up engines such as this traditionally only in the price range of triple-A studios is a very promising sign for game developers of all levels.
Steam began diversifying into non-game software back in October 2012.
