The extremely popular - and previously free -
Garry's Mod for Half Life 2 will soon be available as a $10 purchase through Steam.
For those who don't know the mod, which has been a massive hit with Half Life 2 gamers since its release, it allows users almost unlimited customisability of Half Life 2. In the most recent versions Garry's mod (or Gmod as it is know by its players) players can do everything from rearranging characters and objects, facial expressions and even game types and weapons.
The mod has given rise to a whole host of unique online communities, including games that involve creating the best fortresses out of objects like chairs and bicycles, music videos such as
Still Seeing Breen that get featured on MTV, and my personal favourite, the
recreation of A Few Good Men.
However, the team behind the mod have made the controversial decision to join forces with Valve and charge for the next update. Although the cost will be only a small charge of $10, the Garry's mod community are worried that it could split fans, whilst others are concerned this could lead to a trend in mod makers to begin charging for their add ons.
The Garry's mod team see the co-operation with Valve as the next step. In a move that bears a resemblance to Valve's takeover of the Counter-Strike team, the split on the profits of Garry's mod will be 50/50. For all those complaining that Garry's mod has sold out Garry himself had this to say:
“I was pretty much done with GMod... There was no reason for me to fix all the bugs, which required a whole lot of work. I planned to release a few bug/security fixes and leave it at that. This deal bought GMod back. There was a reason for me to work on it…the community wins that way”.
The current version will remain as a free download, being titled as a demo of the retail version, and if you want to get your hands on it you can find it
here.
So there you have it. Is this a good move for the modding community?
