Grand Theft Auto 5 has broken the world record for best-selling video game within 24 hours and six other records.

According to Guinness World Records, the game also qualifies for the world record of the fastest entertainment property to generate $1bn. The title hit $1bn in sales after less than three days on sale, selling $815.7 in its first day alone.

The remaining five records are around a similar theme and include best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours, fastest video game to gross $1bn, the highest grossing video game in 24 hours and highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours.

Away from the sales focus, Grand Theft Auto 5 also scooped the record for the most viewed trailer for an action-adventure game.

'Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it's taken on the might of Hollywood and won!' said Guinness World Records editor in chief Craig Glenday.

Grand Theft Auto 5 launched on September 17 on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 with the game's much anticipated online multiplayer component launching a week later.

Whilst the game currently sits with an outstanding metacritic score of 98, many outlets have criticised the game for its apparent misogyny and temperamental multiplayer mode which has been plagued with server issues and save-game bugs.

A title update issued by Rockstar today on the Playstation 3 version and 'tomorrow at the latest' for the Xbox 360 does however aim to address these gameplay progress issues along with several other bugs.
