Mario Kart 8 has sold 1.2 million copies since its May 29 launch according to internal sales figures from Nintendo.
This makes Mario Kart 8 the fastest selling Wii U game to date. Nintendo also highlights that it is the 14th Wii U game to launch in the US with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher.
’The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead,’ said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. ’This year’s E3 is just days away and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!’
The Wii U edition of the popular kart racer franchise does however have a long way to go before it approaches the success of previous entries in the series. Mario Kart Wii has clocked up a total of 35.5 million sales since its launch.
Even the lowest performing entries to the series, Mario Kart Advance and Mario Kart: Double Dash have sold 5.9 million and 6.9 million respectively. So far, the Wii U has only sold an estimated 6.2 million units worldwide leaving Mario Kart 8 with a smaller install base to work with.
Mario Kart 8 launched on May 29 in Japan and May 30 in the US and Europe. It was met by a positive critical reception although several outlets have complained of the title’s lacklustre battle mode which replaces battle arenas with the game’s race courses.
