Nintendo, bless its heart, has today announced that it will be giving away free Wiimote jackets to all current Wii owners starting on October 15th.

The Wiimote jacket is a silicone cover with some in-built cushioning that wraps around the Wiimote and protects it (and anything it may hit) from damage. According to the press release, the Wiimote will "cushioning for the Wii Remote for people who might accidentally throw or drop their Wii Remotes while playing games."

The offer is currently only open to those in the US or Canada, but we expect European availability in the near future. As it is, those of you who reside in the US or Canada can sign up to get your free jackets via Wii.com, Nintendo.com or by calling 866-431-8367. Nintendo is taking orders now and will start shipping the remotes on October 15th.

The silicone jackets will also be packaged with all future Wiis, separately sold Wiimotes and all copies of Wii Play.

"We're always looking for ways to improve our products and make sure everyone has a safe and fun experience," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Many electronics manufacturers provide similar protective covers for products like cell phones, PDAs and MP3 players."

The Wiimote jacket, which looks quite fetching to us, should actually help stop all those broken TVs we keep seeing.

Have you ever broken anything with your Wiimote or SixAxis, or do prefer to keep your gaming limited to the 360 and only move your thumbs? Let us know in the forums, if you please.
