Call of Duty developer Treyarch has announced that the next game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops, will allow modding on the PC version.

Mod tools will not be available on the disc however, with Treyarch promising to release the tools at some undefinied point after launch. The developer console will be available from the start, however.

The announcement came on the official forums, where a Treyarch developer said that creating the tools was not a trivial amount of work and would therefore have to wait until after the game had shipped.

"We plan to open the game up for modding sometime post-launch. We do not know yet to what extent you will be able to mod the game," said the Treyarch dev.

"There are some purely technical issues related to engine and internal tool enhancements that do not easily fit the modtools paradigm. We have looked at it close enough to see that it is non-trivial and we will have to pick it up again post-launch. Right now we are completely focused on finishing the game."

Will this open the way for more cheating in multiplayer games? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
