AMD has slashed the prices of its processors today in a move to remain competitive with Intel's recently-released Core 2 Duo processors.
Last Wednesday, AMD told its partners that it was planning to drop the prices on its processors on the 24th and today those prices are realised. However, the prices are slightly different to those that were initially uncovered last week.
The flagship Athlon 64 FX-62 will drop from $1031 to $827, while all other dual-core Athlon 64's will drop below the $301-mark. The X2 5000+ is a mere $15 cheaper than the Core 2 Duo E6600. Our own performance evaluations show that Intel's Core 2 Duo E6600 chip is considerably faster in many situations and only slightly slower in a couple of instances when it does in fact lose out to the X2 5000+.
The Core 2 Duo E6400 - priced at $224 - sits in between the Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and 4200+ chips, which are cost $240 and $187 respectively. There are some situations where the E6400 actually outpeforms the X2 5000+, nevermind the X2 4600+. The only area where the E6400 appears to under-perform is in multi-tasking scenarios.
AMD's popular X2 3800+ brings up the rear at $152 - this is considerably cheaper than Intel's Core 2 Duo E6300, which is $183. AMD has also extended the price cuts to its single-core Athlon 64 and Sempron chips. You can see full details of the price cuts on AMD's home page.
