Corsair's case-building division has formally announced a new entry its Carbide family, the compact mid-tower 200R.

Designed to appeal to budget-conscious system builders who nevertheless try to avoid the razor-sharp super-cheap cases on the market, the Carbide 200R builds on the existing Carbide models with a cut-down version. Despite this, the company has tried hard to tick all the major boxes: the case is entirely tool-free except for motherboard mounting, with thumbscrews on the case and expansion slots and clever mounting systems for 5.25" and 3.5" bays, and includes two USB 3.0 SuperSpeed ports at the front, cable routing ducts and support for 2.5" drives without adapters.

'The Carbide 200R is a great value case that breaks the mould by offering intelligent features, great cooling expandability, elegant looks, and is extremely easy to build,' boasted Thi La, Corsair's senior vice president of memory and enthusiast products, at the unveiling. 'Too often PC builders on a budget are limited to low quality, poor-performing cases with ‘extreme’ looks. Now they have a clear, refined choice.'

The case includes a matte-black interior with room for seven expansion cards, four hard drives, four SSDs and three 5.25" devices, and includes two fans as standard with room for another six. Graphics cards of up to 430mm long are supported, although this drops to 300mm if the secondary drive cage is installed, while CPU coolers of up to 160mm are compatible. The front of the case includes dust filters, the aforementioned USB 3.0 ports and microphone and headphone HD Audio connectors.

Most impressive of all is Corsair's positioning of the Carbide 200R in the market: while official UK pricing has yet to be confirmed, the company's US recommended retail price for the case is a budget-friendly $59.99 (around £37.33 excluding taxes) making it the cheapest Corsair Carbide case around and a serious contender for the budget buyer.
