SilverStone has just launched its new Raven RV03 case, which we've been eagerly awaiting since our
preview in October. The case features design elements of the brilliant
Fortress FT03, with the PSU placed at the front of the case under the drive bays.
The PSU will have to be mounted sideways, with vents on either side of the case to give it airflow. However, this limits the maximum length of the PSU to 180mm – we believe the case will come with a right-angle connector or some other clever way of routeing the mains cable to the PSU.
There are two 180mm Air Penetrator fans in the floor of the Raven RV03, which blow upwards over the rotated motherboard towards the roof-mounted 120mm exhaust fan. You can fit up to seven fans in the case, with four 120mm fan mounts at the front, another on the side and a final 120mm fan mount at the rear of the case. The Raven RV03 can also accommodate an E-ATX motherboard and has space for eight expansion slots.
While it looks like the positioning of the PSU at the front of the case has reduced the number of hard disk bays, there are a couple of supplementary bays on the rear of the motherboard tray. They’re joined by the side panel fan mount, so you can blow cool air onto the rear of your motherboard's CPU socket (via the hole to mount CPU cooler backplates) and over these disks. This area also holds some interesting devices for cable management.
The front panel is hidden behind a flip-up panel at the front of the roof, and contains two USB 3 ports, plus the usual connections. Unfortunately, we can’t tell whether the USB 3 ports connect to a pass-through cable or an internal header.
The layout of the Raven RV03 is certainly unusual, but with the success of previous unique cases, we’re really looking forward to seeing this case in our labs. We’re also intrigued by the gold flashes down either side of the case too.
Let us know your thoughts about the unique design and looks of the Raven RV03 in the
forums.
