MSI has announced its first gaming laptops to feature Intel's top-end Kaby Lake processors, claiming between an eight and 25 percent performance boost over previous-generation parts depending on whether you're running at stock or overclocking.

Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, MSI's new laptop family - which comprises 14 models, of which 12 are rated as being suitable for virtual reality (VR) use - offers upgraded specifications over the company's previous models. Chief among these is the switch to Intel's latest seventh-generation Core processor family, codename Kaby Lake, which MSI claims allows for between eight and 15 percent performance boost at stock clocks and between 15 and 25 percent when overclocked when put head-to-head against the previous-generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ.

The top-end models, based around the Core i7-7700HQ and Core i7-7820HK chips, are being specifically targeted at gamers wanting to run virtual reality hardware on-the-go. Boasting of its partnership with HTC, MSI has equipped the laptops with Nvidia GeForce GTX 10-series graphics processors - up to two in SLI, on the highest-specification models - as well as adding virtual surround-sound technology courtesy Nahamic VR.

While MSI has confirmed plans to update its entire gaming portfolio to Kaby Lake processors, the company has not offered a formal timescale for availability nor has it discussed pricing for any of the models shown off at the show.
