SanDisk has officially launched what it claims is the ultimate in USB flash drives, in the form of the 128GB SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0.

Designed for those who not only need a decent-sized wodge of storage in their pocket at all times but who also require said storage to be blisteringly fast, the premium pen-drive boasts a USB 3.0 connection in order to offer peak performance. Unlike typical USB 3.0 flash drives that peter out at around 100MB/s, however, SanDisk's latest boasts figures more readily associated with entry-level to mid-range SATA-connected SSDs: 260MB/s read and 240MB/s write.

'The SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0 drive offers world-class performance for technology aficionados who demand high-speed, durability and peace of mind that their files will be safe,' claimed SanDisk's Philippe Willams at the unveiling. 'We are excited to be expanding our USB 3.0 solutions, and this is another example of our efforts to enable consumers with fast access to content and data.'

Initially, the drive will be available in 128GB capacity only with SanDisk likely to see how demand goes before producing larger versions. The family will all include the usual features of premium pen drives, with SanDisk SecureAccess bundled to provide password protection and 128-bit AES encryption and an aluminium casing designed to protect the drive in transit.

Performance doesn't come cheap, however: pricing has been confirmed at £149.95 in the UK, putting it considerably above the level of an admittedly less-portable 128GB 2.5" SATA drive in a USB 3.0 housing.
