Forewordby Harry Butler
Far Cry 2
is being released today and, judging from Joe's review
of Ubisoft's hotly anticipated sandbox shooter yesterday, it has the potential to be Game of the Year. With that in mind, what better way to celebrate Ubisoft's superb sandbox shooter with an equally awesome Far Cry 2
Over the past few months, we’ve seen plenty of highly creative PC modding projects both in our forums
and on the front page
as well. However, über German modder Oliver “Butterkneter” König
decided to go against the grain and instead chose to take an unsuspecting Playstation 3 down to the Dremel dentist's surgery for the full modding treatment.
Some of you may remember some of Butterkneter's work over the past few years, as he's been commissioned by Electronic Arts on a number of occasions. His most famous work was his excellent Battlefield 2 mods
and he's also worked on a couple of FIFA mods
What follows is the dentist's report from the black monolith's trip into Butterkneter's surgery - we're not sure what's behind the door to his practice though, as this poor PS3 returned as a civil war ravaged masterpiece! And so, without further ado, I'll step aside and let Olly get on with describing his creation...
Introduction and planning
A while back, I received an email from Ubisoft asking me for some concept art for a potential Far Cry 2
mod based on Sony's Playstation 3. Ubisoft had been pleased with my past work when I worked with it on a number of similar projects for Assassin's Creed
and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
, so with such a big game I needed to create something special.
I sketched out a rough idea of how the mod would look. I wanted to include plenty of the war-torn African elements from the game, so included a machete, an AK-47 magazine, bullet casings and giant bugs, as well as the idea for the battle damaged PS3. All of this would be set on a sandy-looking base that would look like I'd carved out a piece of land from the African savannah where the game is set.
