What's the best supersize case fan?

Yate Loon produces two 220mm fans with similar sound and performance – the D22SL-12H and the D22BL-12H (below). The former spins at 600rpm with an airflow rating of 135cfm at 25.5dBA, while the latter spins at 750rpm and can apparently produce 168cfm at 31.8dBA.

Both fans are made from transparent plastic, but the 750rpm D22BL-12H has four blue LEDs dotted around the motor. We measured the D22SL-12H’s airflow as 61cfm and its sound pressure as 32.3dBA. This is far less airflow than Yate Loon’s claims, and is no doubt due to the fact that, like all supersize fans except the Antec Big Boy 200, the D22SL-12H has very low static air pressure.

The higher-speed D22BL-12H fared better, shifting 76cfm, although it was louder at 35.3dBA. This means that neither Yate Loon fan tested here is especially loud, nor do they shift much more air than the 120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon D1225C12B4AP-14.

To add insult to injury, the Scythe Gentle Typhoon is also quieter than either Yate Loon fan here. As such, despite their better-than-average performance for supersize fans, neither Yate Loon model is a worthy alternative to the awesome Antec Big Boy 200.
