Intel has confirmed that "limited quantities" of an experimental processor featuring 48 physical cores will be shipping to academia this year, courtesy of its Tera-scale project.
Intel has taken the wraps of a prototype processor which features 48 addressable processing cores, dubbed the Single Chip Cloud Computer.
In order to boost development of multi-core aware applications, Intel has bought two software companies in the last month: parallelism specialists Rapidmind and Cilk.
Chip manufacturer Intel is advising developers to concentrate on coding for scalability, believing the future of computing lies in hundreds and thousands of processing cores.
