Wargaming buys Total Annihilation and Master of Orion from Atari

Atari has auctioned off several of its intellectual properties with studios Wargaming, Rebellion, Stardock, Epic Gear and Tommo as buyers.

The rights to classic RTS Total Annihilation and 4X strategy title Master of Orion both went to World of Tanks developer Wargaming. This also follows Wargaming's acquisition of Gas Powered Games, Total Annihilation creator Chris Taylor's studio, giving rise to speculation that a true Total Annihilation sequel might be on its way.

Stardock was also after Master of Orion but was outbid by Wargaming. The studio did however buy Star Control.

Rebellion picked up Battlezone and Moonbase Commander, Epic Gear successfully bid on the Backyard sports series and Tommo left the auction with the most amusing line up of titles being Math Gran Prix, Humungous and Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise.

Also up for auction were the Test Drive and Rollercoaster Tycoon franchises, but these remained unsold with their minimum bids not met. These two series were classed as Atari's most valuable assets.

Atari's brand and logo is also still up for grabs and should be auctioned at a later date. Bids from this auction will be finalised tomorrow.

Atari filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, joining publisher THQ which is coming to the end of bankruptcy proceedings of its own.
