Piracy on and off the High Seas

BT: With niche games like Ship Simulator Extreme, do you still find piracy (of the software kind) a big issue for your game?

Frank: Ah, so you think software pirates are not interested in our wonderful games? Ha! Software piracy is something you always come across as a developer, and our game is, unfortunately, no exception.

BT: And what about piracy of the naval kind – is that in the game?

Frank: Ah, well I can’t disclose too much about that yet (at least not without being lynched by the rest of the team), but let me say this...keep your eye fixed on the horizon and look for some fast vessels on a collision course.

BT: Judging from feedback from your fans, what sort of things do gamers enjoy doing in your game by the way? Is it all about missions and mods, or do fans mostly enjoy exploring or cruising aimlessly?

Frank: Lots of different things. We have a core community that loves the realism of the game and the huge amount of additional realistic missions that can be downloaded. There's a dedicated modding community consisting of real captains and maritime professionals or aficionado’s that are creating missions and add-ons for the game.

Others like to experiment with the weather and water system and push their vessels to the limit, while others just like to put the throttle on full and race with the powerboats or other faster craft. It depends what kind of gameplay you like. Some like the challenge of captaining a huge mammoth tanker, others want the speed of a fast yacht.

BT: An odd question to end on, but we promised we’d ask – have you ever thought of looking into making Ship Simulator cross compatible with other sim games, or the Silent Hunter series? Our deputy editor specifically requested we suggest the feature to you.

Frank: Well, we haven’t contacted the Silent Hunter developers yet, but even besides the paperwork, there’s still a bit more to it than Plug ‘n Play.

Wouldn’t it be great though if all games out there were cross compatible with each other? Just imagine the possibilities – though maybe I'll leave that to you guys!

And that's all we had time for! Ship Simulator Extremes will be released later this year and published by Paradox Interactive. We'd like to thank Frank and the Paradox PR team for their time and if you've got any thoughts on the game then let us know in the forums!
